KENT’S Olympic star Kelly Holmes was welcomed home in style aboard an open-top Kings Ferry bus.
The double gold medallist and her family were able to soak up the atmosphere and cheers from the top deck as the bus wound through Tonbridge and Hildenborough where the former PT instructor grew up.
Some 40,000 people lined the seven-mile route leading to a civic reception at Tonbridge Castle in honour of the winner of the women’s 800 and 1,500 metre gold medals.
But the success of the celebrations belied feverish activity beforehand that led to contact with The Kings Ferry.
The Gillingham-based group has operated an open top bus for many years and it recently completed a sightseeing service around the Medway Towns throughout the school holidays.
The Kings Ferry chairman Peter O’Neill said:
“Our open top bus was obviously just right for the drive through the streets and we were happy to help.
We also wanted to arrange something more comfortable to take Kelly and her family home after the civic reception and at the end of a long day.
So we sent our flagship 32-seat award-winning super executive coach to do the job – a fitting finale to a great day for Kelly, her family and her fans.”
